Lusignan is not too far from my original home and I was told the tale of Melusine in my youth. It is a mysterious and strange tale of power and betrayal which exact origin is still unknown.
Melusine is a water fae, known for being a shapeshifter who can transform into a woman, a serpent, or a combination of the two. As part of their marriage agreement, Raymond must promise not to ask her what she does every Saturday in the forest.
Sadly, Raymond did not keep his promise, and saw his wife transform into a half-serpent creature in front of him. Shocked by what he had seen, Raymond banished his wife, who fled in sorrow and despair. To make up for his betrayal, Raymond decided to build a castle in her honour and name it after her. It was known as Château de Melusine, or the Castle of Melusine.
Different point of views
But in the version I know, it is Melusine that leaves Raymond because he broke his promises and therefore lost her trust forever. He tries desperately to get her back but his efforts are fruitless. Regardless of which version you choose to believe, one thing remains true – the story of Melusine is a captivating one full of mystery and enchantment.
More versions of the tale exist as well. In some versions, Melusine is a spirit or goddess of fresh water, found in rivers, lakes and streams. In another, Melusine is a water spirit who lures men to their deaths. Yet another version depicts Melusine as an evil enchantress who curses Raymond’s descendants.
