Breathing and visualisation exercise
I have been doing This breathing and visualisation exercise for over 20 years. It has always brought me peace and well-being in times of great emotional distress.
Breath in – Breath out
Relaxation
- Find a quiet place so you won’t be disturbed. I love doing this exercise at dawn before everyone is awake.
- Whether you sit or stand is up to you as long as your feet are firmly hankered on the floor.
- Breath in. Imagine that a big and strong tree is supporting your back, it is keeping you safe. Sense how this big and strong tree is making you feel safe and protected.
- Breathe out and imagine that like the tree your feet represent your roots. And, your roots are reaching the centre of the earth.
- Breath in. Imagine that all those things that make you feel bad look like a big cloud of dark smoke. As you breathe out you will imagine that this dark cloud is going down your roots and reaches the centre of the earth. You will breathe out until there is no more air in your lungs, feeling the darkness leaving your body and being taken into the earth, liberating you in the process.
- Breathe in as deeply as you can and turn your eyes toward the sky as if you were looking at the top of your head, you can imagine this and look up with your eyes open or closed this is up to you.
- When you breathe out imagine lots of little branches on the top of your head reaching the sky, the stars, the galaxy, the universe. You can also lift up your harms to represent more branches reaching up but this is optional. Go as far as your imagination can take you.
- Then Breathe in and imagine the light of the sun’s warm embrace on the top of your head. Breathe out and send your branches as high as possible again. Breathe in and feel the light filling your body down to your roots to the centre of the earth.
Closure
Do this cycle 3 times in total. Once you have finished do not forget to be thankful to the universe, the trees, the earth and the sky. You can adapt this to your belief and be thankful to your angel, your god, your sacred spirit or anything that is important to you.
